Face2face

Programme of cross-channel contemporary art tours

Overview

Summary: Face2Face brought together a programme of contemporary art tours that encourages tourists and local people to access high quality cultural activity via environmentally sustainable methods such as bike, boat, train, bus and walking routes. The aim was to encourage a wide variety of audiences, as well as artists and art professionals, to explore either side of the Channel. Face2Face strengthened cultural cooperation and reinforced homogeneity in the cross-border area, giving greater visibility to public education and outreach programmes.

Three French and two British arts organisations (Espace Croisé, Roubaix; Saison Vidéo, Lille; artconnexion, Lille; Commissions East, Cambridge; and Turner Contemporary, Margate) organised contemporary art events, commissions, residencies and film screenings in a variety of heritage sites and arts venues in Kent, Essex, Suffolk and the Nord Pas de Calais region of France. Face2Face offered tourists and local people a series of unique experiences and encounters, highlighting destinations within the Cross Border area that are not traditional tourist attractions or well-known for their cultural heritage. Face2Face was supported by a cultural exchange programme for arts professionals and practitioners.

Activities

What was the project trying to achieve?

The project encouraged a wide variety of tourists , artists, arts professionals and local people to access high quality cultural activities via environmentally sustainable methods . The audiences discovered exhibitions, public art commissions, met artists in residences and participated in debates about the arts. This was achieved through 3 Cross Channel laboratories, 66 meetings with artists and 1 symposium. Tours which were accessible by bus, bike or on foot allowed audiences to explore for free new places and discover contemporay art . 21 Arts tours by coach, 2 Fleet Bike Rides and 6 tours on Foot delivered these key project objectives The partners successfully encouraged the discovery of the other side of the channel developing new collaborations between 55 cultural associations, 275 artists, 17 towns/counties, 19 tourism offices, 17 schools and Universities and 11 private entreprises or inhabitant associations . This collaboration assisted in developing the cultural and tourism attractivity of the Nord-Pas de Calais, Essex, Suffolk and Kent Counties. The project has resulted in a sustainable network for art, tourism, education, and town professionals. Expectations related to participation in the various counties were exceeded with project actions reaching a record audience of 174 137 visitors.

What were the activities implemented?

Activity 1 involved the development of an artistic programme with the creation of new works and exhibitions. The new contemporary art tours enabled the public to discover different activities in the domain of contemporary art whilst exploring new territories and regions. The partners offered to the audience more than 21 art tours for free, 58 exhibitions, 6 performancies, 53 scrennings, 66 meetings with artists. As part of these events, the partners produced 62 new pieces of art and 6 monographic publications. The partners supported new creation and were particulary engaged in the promotion of fthe rench and English artistic scene. More than 275 artists from various nationalities and diverse aesthetics were invited to exhibit or to present their research to the audience. 59% of them were French or English natives.

Activity two, was focused on artist residencies. Artconnexion, Commissions East and Turner contemporary managed a total of 19 residencies. The partners invited artists into their venues or local heritage sites in order to carry out new work. These artists’ residencies served as a starting point for new art works, debates and discussions with the public. They were organised on either side of the Channel to encourage the circulation of the public, professionals and artists over the whole cross-border area. In Suffolk and Essex, these residencies were an opportunity for artists to meet local interest groups and communities and imagine and develop site-specific art projects. The french partner, with its inovative concept of the P&O residencies enabled French or English artists to discover the cross border area for a few days and to experiment on board a coach in the direction from Calais to Dover .

The third activity set up professional training for artists, education officers, and professionals in the arts and tourism sectors. A Cross Channel Laboratory and a Firstsite artists professional Develomment Day was developed- these training schemes were carried out by the partner organisations enabling the mobility between the cross-border regions. This cultural offer enabled examination from both sides of the Channel of the issues relative to working in innovative ways and the value of artistic work in sites of special historical and environmental interest, particularly with regard to tourism, economic development and sustainable transport.

Results

The project enjoyed a wide press coverage. 245 press articles underlined the interest inthe Face2Face project. 61 % of these articles were published in the local medias and 39% in the national medias.

Did all partners and territories benefit from the results?

The targetted audience and beneficiaries for the project was comprised of individuals who are interested in culture and contemporary art or those who wanted to discover the heritage of the counties in innovative and sustainable ways. In addition, the local residents via schools, colleges, universities, organisations dedicated to social aims, town planners, inhabitants associations etc. benefitted from the activities of the project .The project opened contemporary art to the widest possible audience over the two regions; Nord-Pas de Calais and South East England (Kent, Suffolk and Essex). More strategically the project increased interest by influencing key agencies and public sector bodies involved in tourism and economic development and regeneration as well as of course professionals working in the field of arts and culture. The key beneficiaries were: the partners who developed collaborations together, enlargied their professional and communication network; the artists (who benefited from an exhbition, a screening, a conference, a monographic publication, an opportunity to do a residency with the production of new work; tourism officers who benefited from new cultural offers; art and touristy sector professionals who could elaborate news links and the public. Individuals or groups in the eligible area benefitted from the various cultural and touristy offers developed free of charge by the partners as part of Face2Face. All partners were actively engaged and benefitted from the results.

What were the effects / outcomes for the territories involved?

The project resulted in an increased understanding amongst target audiences of contemporary art within the eligible area of the cross border programme. Arts and cultural works and ideas have been made more accessible to wider audiences who have benefitted from the project and been inspired by their experiences. The profile of the culture and tourism sector related to such works/exhibitions and artistic creations has been significantly raised through the extensive press articles which have promoted this work. The audience has discovered new ways to interact with thieir social and political environment. in environmentally sustainable ways The partners have created, as part of Face2Face, 3 permanent jobs and 73 temporary jobs resulting in economic growth within this sector. Furthermore, new cultural offers have been established increasing the attractivity of the area and a sustainable network of cultural actors has been developed through the project leading to new collaborations and opportunities within the field of contemporary arts.

Distinctiveness

What was the real added-value of doing this cross-border project?

The Cross Channel Laboratory and symposium provided the opportunity to examine issues relative to working in sites of special historical and environmental interest, particularly with regard to tourism, economic development and sustainable transport. Artists, art and touristy sector professionnals from both sides of the channel could together explore the question of the value of artistic work in relation to historic sites and tourism. They could exchange ideas, points of view, process methods, skills and develop new collaborations leading to new and innovative ideas and the increased cultural understanding of the eligible counties concerned. The idea of mutualization (skills, networks...) is one of the interests of working in a cross border collaboration. Face2Face created strong collaboration links between the partners who could benefit from the art network of each other. From now on, partners will act as intercessors between partners and English and French artistic networks. They will continue to collaborate and will raise the profile of each other on both sides of the Channel.

Have any synergies been developed with other projects or networks?

The project brought together both project partner and external partner artistic offers as well as professionals and audiences from a wide variety of arts-based backgrounds. involved or participating in project actiivities The networks of each cross border partner is now more accessible to partners on the other side of the channel with opportunities to raise each other's respective profiles with the project partners acting as an intercessors. Many organisations and artists have been brought into contact with each other beyond the project partnership which can lead to lasting collaborations.

Key messages and key lessons shared by the project

A good collaboration with the partners and JTS is essential for an efficient implementation of the project. Knowing very accurately the specific administrative and financial attempts of the programme really helps to manage it. The role of the leader project is essential to live up the partnership. The achievement of the expected results is deeply linked to the good cooperation between the partners. The various skills and missions of the partners must be complementary. The role of the lead partner in this matter is to create a groupe dynamics, to accompany the different actions and to check their implementation. The results also come from the capacity of the partners to adapt their proposition for them to be common actions, serving the project.

Sustainability

Sustainability and long lasting effect at project level

Face2Face enabled project partners to strengthen and share skills, experience and networks acquired during previous projects undertaken with funding from the European Social Fund, the EU Culture Programme 2007-2013, and the Interreg IIIA programme.
Face2Face was a new project which created new activities by capitalising on previous experiences. Face2Face also built on existing tourism strategies, developing an entirely new tourism product, increasing visitor numbers to the Cross-Border area and contributing to regional economic development (accommodation, restaurant businesses, transport). Face2Face was the first project which offered contemporary art tours on both sides of the Channel, and generated the interest of other cultural organizations.
The partners have benefited from an increase in their audience and the interest of the media. Some of them decided to benefit from this visiblity, credibility and support in order to put forward new innovative cross-border collaboration projects.

Sustainability and long lasting effect at networking level

Face2Face enabled the creation of a strong collaboration and links between the partners and they could benefit from the art network of each other. From now on, they will act as the interface between partners and for English and French art networks. They will continue to collaborate and will serve to build the profile of each other on both sides of the channel.

What’s next?

Commissions East has developed a further major partnership project which will be included in the National Trusts ‘Trust New Art’ programme. Artconnexion will continue to work with Commissions East. They will look for funds to build a Culture project or an Interreg project in the future. They want to sustain what has been learnt from working with each other and to continue to share work experience and working models.

The partners also plan to develop joint projects around production, residencies and commissions.

Espace Croisé is working on a new crossborder cooperation project as part of the interreg IV France-Wallonie Cross Border Programme.

The contemporary art center would also like to develop its network to Belgium in order to gain visibilty and enlarge its audience.
